The Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL) invites applications for a Postdoctoral researcher in the project ‘Interactional linguistics from periphery to core’, funded by an Ammodo Award for Fundamental Science awarded to Dr. Jenneke van der Wal. The position is a full‑time (1.0 FTE) temporary appointment for three years, with an initial one‑year contract renewable after a positive evaluation. The start date is flexible, with the earliest possible commencement in August 2026.
The project aims to explore what a model of grammar must look like to explain how speakers’ and listeners’ knowledge is expressed in morphosyntax. Central to the work is the incorporation of evidentiality, egophoricity, and mirativity into a formal theory of grammar, building on Wiltschko’s universal and interactional spine hypothesis. The researcher will address questions such as which aspects of these categories are syntactic, the role of agreement in linking higher and lower spine domains, and whether different languages show structurally distinct ways of integrating interactional features.
Responsibilities include developing a formal analysis of evidentiality, egophoricity, and/or mirativity, presenting results at (international) conferences, and co‑authoring at least three scientific publications in peer‑reviewed journals based on the project work. The postdoc may also contribute to related courses and outreach activities, and is expected to collaborate closely with the MapLE project team.
The successful candidate will join an active international research environment at LUCL, which hosts over 120 linguists and offers regular seminars, collaborative opportunities, and access to modern experimental methods. LUCL is part of the Faculty of Humanities at Leiden University, providing a rich interdisciplinary setting that spans philosophy, history, literature, and area studies. The position is based in Leiden, with the expectation to work on‑site.
Terms and conditions follow the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. The salary ranges from €4,728 to €4,901 gross per month (pay scale 11.0–11.1), supplemented by an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end‑of‑year bonus. Leiden University offers a comprehensive benefits package, including training, career development, a dual‑career programme for international spouses, and potential tax breaks for non‑Dutch candidates. Applications must be submitted via the university’s portal by 28 June 2026, including a CV, publication list, a cover letter (max 2 pages), a research plan (max 2 pages), and details of two referees.
