The University of Waikato’s School of Science is seeking a motivated Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Tāwhia Te Mana Fellowship project, which investigates the evolutionary ecology and genomics of invasive blowflies. This part‑time, one‑year fixed‑term position (0.8 FTE, 30 hours per week) is located at the Hillcrest Campus in Hamilton, New Zealand. The project aims to uncover the genetic and ecological mechanisms that enable blowfly species to establish and spread in new environments, integrating fieldwork, laboratory experiments, and comparative genomics.
The successful candidate will work closely with Dr Ang McGaughran, a Senior Lecturer in the School of Science, and will collaborate with local and international research teams. Responsibilities include designing and executing experiments, analysing genomic data, developing eco‑evolutionary models, preparing manuscripts for peer‑reviewed journals, and presenting findings at conferences and seminars. The fellow is also expected to contribute to student supervision and outreach activities that promote the societal relevance of the research.
Applicants must demonstrate a strong background in evolutionary ecology, population genetics, or genomics, with proven ability to conduct high‑quality independent research. Essential skills include expertise in molecular laboratory techniques, bioinformatic analysis of sequencing data, and statistical modelling. The candidate should be a highly motivated researcher, adept at building relationships with diverse stakeholders, and comfortable communicating complex scientific concepts to both academic and non‑academic audiences.
The position is funded as a salary‑based appointment, with an annual remuneration ranging from NZD 92,603 to NZD 101,889, pro‑rated according to the part‑time schedule. The appointment includes standard university benefits such as access to research facilities, professional development opportunities, and participation in the university’s vibrant academic community. The work arrangement is primarily on‑site, fostering direct interaction with supervisors, colleagues, and laboratory resources.
Applications must be submitted through the online portal linked in the advertisement; emailed applications will not be accepted. The closing date for applications is 12 July 2026 at 00:00 UTC. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted for interviews, and the anticipated start date is shortly after the selection process concludes. Further details, including the full position description and application instructions, are available via the Times Higher Education job listing.
For informal inquiries, prospective applicants may contact Dr Ang McGaughran directly at [email protected]. The University of Waikato is committed to equity and diversity, encouraging applications from individuals of all backgrounds who have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand in accordance with immigration regulations.
