Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, through its Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS) and the School of Dental Medicine (RSDM), is seeking a Postdoctoral Associate to join the Department of Oral Biology. The position is based at the Newark campus and reports to a Principal Investigator whose research program examines the biological responses to biomedical implant materials. The successful candidate will contribute to a project that investigates how degradation products from dental and orthopedic implants modulate host immune responses, with the ultimate goal of developing novel therapeutic strategies for peri‑implant disease, periodontal disease, and chronic low‑grade inflammation.
The research utilizes advanced in vitro and in vivo models, including primary macrophage cultures, multicellular 2D and 3D culture platforms, and murine models. Responsibilities encompass designing and executing experiments to assess gene and protein expression, establishing and maintaining complex cell culture systems, performing co‑culture assays between immune and stromal cell populations, conducting immunostaining on paraffin‑ and frozen‑tissue sections, and analyzing high‑throughput datasets such as RNA‑sequencing and proteomics. The role also involves routine laboratory maintenance, ensuring optimal research conditions, and assisting in the preparation of grant proposals, manuscripts, and conference presentations.
Applicants must hold a PhD in molecular biology, immunology, biomedical engineering, or a closely related field; candidates who are in the final stages of their doctoral training and will obtain the degree prior to the start date are also considered. Essential qualifications include strong expertise in mammalian cell culture, particularly with macrophage and immune cell systems, as well as problem‑solving, communication, and organizational skills. Preferred experience includes working with multicellular 2D/3D models such as organoids or spheroids, proficiency with RNA‑seq and/or proteomics workflows, and familiarity with murine models and basic surgical techniques.
The appointment is a full‑time, 12‑month position with a standard workweek of 37.5 hours. The work arrangement is fully on‑site at the Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences facilities in Newark, New Jersey. The university offers a competitive salary range reported as a minimum of USD 20,000, a midpoint of USD 90,000, and a maximum of USD 200,000 per year, commensurate with qualifications and experience, along with a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, prescription, dental coverage, paid leave, retirement plans, and educational benefits.
Interested candidates should submit their application through the Rutgers online careers portal, providing a curriculum vitae, a cover letter outlining research interests and relevant experience, and the names of three professional references. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. For further information, applicants may contact the hiring department via the email address listed on the posting or visit the Rutgers RBHS careers website.
